Dr Rory Lewis served as principal investigator on an AI research project for elite female endurance athletes (2012–2013). He developed AI-driven decision support for female Olympic endurance athletes to optimize training, maximize performance, preserve menstrual function, and prevent exercise-associated amenorrhea.
At the request of Ron Brandt, High Performance Director at the United States Olympic Committee’s High Performance Center, the system was developed to support coaches working with female endurance athletes in track and field, cycling, skate skiing, rowing, and speed skating. It was designed to support demanding training while warning coaches of the risk of menstrual-cycle disruption.
The system provided individualized guidance on sprint workload, power output in watts, and calorie expenditure, alongside estimates of the protein, carbohydrates, and total calories needed after a workout. It connected training-load decisions with recovery nutrition to help coaches balance performance demands with athlete health.
